The lack of specificity with objectives and contexts required teachers and schools to work hard to unpack and align learning. Information from international assessments has for quite some time indicated that achievement in key areas of literacy, numeracy and science in New Zealand have declined.
The new early versions of the curriculum released this month are much more specific. They are set out with clear and specific outcomes for each year level at school. This is not left to chance. The documents use UKD – Understand, Know, and Do. The new format is much clearer so that teachers don’t have to spend time unpacking the curriculum. Some areas of curriculum are highlighted indicating specific foundational concepts that must be learned. These all provide more useful direction for assessment and monitoring of progress and overall achievement.
At Diocesan, we are well placed to roll out the new documents and have terrific expertise across the school for implementing and resourcing the changes. We are fortunate that we do not rely on state resources that are often delayed or as yet are unavailable.
Please see below the release of the new national curriculum refresh documents that will be reflected in our Annual Plan over the next four years.
