Fuji Xerox Staff Contribution to Sport Award

Bryan Haggitt
A very deserving winner of the staff contribution to sport for 2020 is Cricket Manager extraordinaire Bryan Haggitt. Bryan can be seen at every 1st XI game performing the numerous tasks required. No matter the time or place, he is there. Bryan is more than just a typical manager, what he brings to the team environment is special and something valued by the team – his ability to set a positive and supportive atmosphere within the team, and even at school is highly valued by all members of the team. The girls especially love the doughnuts at the end of the season. Thank you Bryan for your time and service. We are extremely grateful for all that you do. Congratulations!

Dio Sport Student Coach of the year (joint winners)

Olivia Clark and Laura Whitley.

Olivia Clark – Dio Sport Student Coach of the Year

Olivia Clark is an exemplary student coach for our year 7 & 8 Water Polo program. Olivia is our code captain for water polo and has always made time to give back to the sport with coaching our younger students. Olivia has been a crucial member of the Water Polo coaching team in finding fun and innovative ways to teach girls the fundamental skills of Water Polo. Her care and thoughtfulness for the girls wellbeing is unmatched. We congratulate Olivia and acknowledge her commitment to Water Polo with this award, Diocesan’s Co Student coach of the year.

Laura Whitley – Dio Sport Student Coach of the Year
Laura Whitley has been an outstanding student coach within the Water Polo program here at Dio. She has coached multiple teams across various age groups where she has allowed girls passion for the sport to develop while also challenging the girls to be their best while having fun with their friends. Laura is one of Dio’s most resilient athletes and her passion for coaching was intensified when she wasn’t able to train at full capacity. Laura’s leadership and dedication to Water Polo is amazing and we congratulate her with this well deserved award. Diocesan’s Co Student Coach of the year.

The Dio Sport Student official of the year

Gabby de Latour.
Gabby de Latour has been the go to umpire for Diocesan netball for the past 2 years and has been an incredible asset to the program. No matter the time, or notice given Gabby seems to always be able to help. Our lead umpire on Tuesdays and Saturdays her service is always appreciated. Aside from her own umpiring Gabby also assists many of our junior umpires and encourages them to be confident and stay positive. It’s not easy to give up so much time for something that often does not get the recognition and thanks that it deserves. But tonight Gabby we want to change that by thanking you and recognizing all that you have done to help with the Netball programme. Congratulations Gabby!

The Spraggon McFarlane Cup, for an outstanding Sports Captain.

Francesca Masfen.
This year’s winner of the outstanding sports captain is an extremely deserving winner Francesca Masfen. In the sport of Equestrian, Francesca does it all; an accomplished rider herself phenomenal role model to our younger riders. Francesca sets a culture of enjoyment and inclusiveness in the Equestrian team that has seen the sport grow to its biggest numbers with her two years as code captain. Francesca is always keen to be involved with the girls no matter how old they may be are and supports each member of the squad with great enthusiasm, even helping to organise host Equestrian camps. Thank you Francesca for all that you do and congratulations on a very deserving award!

Recognizing those students who were selected to represent New Zealand, but were not able to compete this year to COVID:

Prudence Fowler Cycling

Prue was named in a 13 strong team to contest the UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships that was to be staged in Cairo in August. It would have been the first time the championship had been staged in the Middle East, and would have been held in the new velodrome in Cairo, Egypt. Prue would have been a part of the Endurance team on the track.

Lena Jacob Fencing

Lena had qualified for the Asian Junior Championships in Jakarta (Indonesia), which have been tentatively delayed to later in the year but are likely to be cancelled. She had also qualified for the World Junior Championships in Salt Lake City (USA), which have also been tentatively delayed to later in the year but are likely to be cancelled.

Chantelle May Fencing

Chantelle was selected to compete for New Zealand in a number of International competitions this year including the Asian Cadet Championships, Asian Junior Championships, World Cadet Championships and the World Junior Championships.

Ella Russ Football

Ella had been selected for the Under 17 World Cup Football Qualifiers in April of this year. These were cancelled. However, due to the cancellation of the event the New Zealand team were automatically awarded the Oceania spot to compete at the 2021 U17 Women’s World Cup in India next year. We wish Ella the best of luck to make the squad that will (hopefully) travel.

Alice Rabbits Aerobic Gymnastics

Alice qualified into the senior international stream for NZ which is an 18+ category. To do this she needed a 17.8 with a 2.3 degree of difficulty which she achieved by scoring an 18.5 with a degree of difficulty of 2.45. Smashing her previous PB. Alice was meant to travel to Arizona in July and represent NZ.

Sienna French Gymnastics

Sienna French was selected to represent New Zealand at the Pacific Rim Championships in Australia. This is a biennial event that gathers the best of artistic, rhythmic and trampoline gymnastics from the Pacific nations. Unfortunately, the event has been cancel this year.

Sarah Young Gymnastics

Sarah was selected to represent NZ at the 2020 Australian Gymnastics championships. The trials for this were back in February until COVID-19 unfortunately meant the tour was cancelled.

Lizzie Shapland Sailing

Lizzie recently performed outstandingly well at youth trials held at Manly Beach this October. She sailed extremely well and won the Youth Females again. In a normal year they would be selected to compete in Youth Worlds in December (which was scheduled to be in Brazil this year), however, due to Covid this event has been cancelled. Lizzie is one of the youngest crews ever to win this event.

Jessica Finnegan Skiing

Jessica was selected for the New Zealand youth team to compete in Europe (December/January 2019) and Canada (March 2020). This was Jessica’s second season on the NZ youth team. Unfortunately the Canada races were cancelled due to COVID. After some more racing this year, Jessica has again been selected for the NZ Youth Team and is number 2 seed.

Aimee Crosbie Swimming

Aimee represented New Zealand at the 2019 McDonald’s Queensland Championships in Brisbane (December 2019). She is a member of the 2020 Swimming New Zealand National Development Gold Squad. Aimee is one of only six female swimmers in New Zealand to have achieved a selection time for this Squad. -Selected for the High Performance Sport New Zealand Pathway to Podium Programme. -Selected as a Target2024 Squad Athlete (squad targeting 2024 Paris Olympics) and attended the annual Target 2024 Development Camp in January 2020.

Georgia Hair Triathlon

Earlier this year Georgia received great news from TRI New Zealand that she had been selected as part of the Triathlon NZ team to compete at the World Championships ITU Grand Final in Edmonton, Canada in August this year.

Morgan McDowall Water polo

Morgan McDowall was selected in the New Zealand Women’s Water Polo team due to play in the Olympic Qualifying tournament in Trieste, Italy 17 May – 24 May. This tournament however has been postponed due to COVID-19. The team is now awaiting confirmation for this tournament to go ahead January 2020. This would have been Morgan’s fourth international tournament with the New Zealand Women but she is now working hard towards playing with our Dio Premier Water Polo team.

We had two student athletes who were lucky enough to represent New Zealand and compete in their chosen field this year.

Zoe Dawson Sailing

Zoe has been able to compete in some competitions this year including: the Harken Youth World Match Racing Championship in February 2020. Zoe sailed with a USA team skippered by David Wood, where they placed 9th. The event was a World Sailing WC grade (highest). She also competed in the NZ Open Teams Racing Nationals in May/June 2020. Placed 3rd. Zoe has been selected to represent New Zealand at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron at the Young America’s Cup in Feb/March of 2021. This event is a World Sailing WC grade.

Katie Crawford Skiing

Katie was selected into the New Zealand Winter Youth Olympic Team to represent NZ in Alpine Ski Racing . She competed at the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne, Switzerland in January (placed 30th in Slalom and 31st in Giant Slalom from a field of 78) . Katie won the Slalom National Junior Champion Title for 2020 (U21age group) – Sep 2020 . Placed 2nd in Slalom at the National Alpine Championships for 2020 (open grade) – Sep 2020.
