Second and third placings for Dio Orienteers at NZSS Champs

Wednesday the 4th of August, 2021

Congratulations to Emma Samuels and Cerys Findlow

Recently, our orienteering team competed at New Zealand Secondary Schools' Championships over the holidays.  This young team did extremely well, coming away with Cerys Findlow (7CO) placing third in the Year 7&8 long standard race, and Emma Samuels (9CW) placing second in the Junior long standard race.

Our students responded well to the challenging courses and terrain. The sprint was technically very difficult and completing the course was a great achievement for our newer orienteers. The Long was very physically demanding, with steep hills and lots of mud (many competitors returned with a shoe in hand, rather than on foot) and again, completing the course was something to be proud of. Lucy Russ 12RO (Senior) and Sienna Payne 10MP (Intermediate) both placed in the top 10 in the extremely competitive long event, each beating at least one athlete who has previously been selected to represent New Zealand in orienteering.

Full list of top 10 place-getters:

Cerys Findlow: 3rd place - Year 7/8 Girls Long (Standard)

Emma Samuels: 2nd place - Year 9 Girls Long (Standard)

Sienna Payne: 6th place - Intermediate Girls Long (Championship)

Lucy Russ: 7th place - Senior Girls Long (Championship)

Lucy Russ, Sienna Payne: 6th place - Senior Girls Relay (Non-competitive)

Well done to all the girls who participated.
