Code Captain Eleanor Carll shares a brief insight into their day
During March, the Dio Sailing Team was invited to spend a day with Team SCA, racing in the Volvo Ocean Race around the world. This team is very special as it is the only girls’ team in the competition.
We went down to the race village on Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour and had a look around the team’s pavilion. Two of the girls on the team gave us a presentation on the race and the team. For us as sailors it was very insightful regarding sailing and working as a team. Sophie Ciszek (bow) and Corinna Halloran (on board reporter) talked about their roles and life on the boat. After the presentation we were provided lunch SCA style, which was amazing. Sophie and Corinna then took us over to the boat and work yard. Being up close to the boat was a special experience. Looking around the boat yard showed us just how extreme the race is. The day ended with a question and answer session run by Murrays Bay.
Sharing time with these sailors was an experience that I will never forget. It was an amazing insight to this world and it inspired many of our team to want to sail around the world
